What is the theory behind the Weekly Mood Chart Worksheet?

Maintaining a weekly mood chart or diary is a very useful technique used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for clients who are finding it difficult to identify the causes behind their negative emotion. It is difficult to see a pattern in day to day life without noting down important details. It can also be used to track the client;s progress with respect to emotional regulation skills. It can be particularly helpful for clients seeking help for mood disorders and anxiety.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will provide a simple template of a weekly mood chart which can help clients keep track of their changing moods throughout the day for 7 days. It will help notice patterns that may indicate what triggers their negative emotions and what contributes to positive emotions. This information is also vital for the therapist to not just determine causes but also track client’s mood regulation progress.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to note down how they feel at specific times of the day throughout the week. Alo instruct them to make very precise notes on any significant event that may have happened prior to or nearby the noted mood. Responses can then be discussed in the next session.
