Cognitive distortions are internal mental filters or biases that increase misery, fuel anxiety, and make us feel bad about ourselves. 

Cognitive distortions can also be defined as the exaggerated thought patterns or beliefs that often promote negative thinking.

Some common cognitive distortions include;

  1. Catastrophizing
  2. All-or-nothing thinking
  3. Overgeneralization
  4. Emotional reasoning
  5. Mind reading
  6. “Should’ statements
  7. Filtering
  8. Labeling
  9. Blaming 

Cognitive distortions is often associated with mental health concerns and has been linked with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychotic episodes
  • Obsessions and compulsions
  • Stress
  • Suicidal thoughts

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps you identify, interrupt and change distorted thoughts with a healthier, more balanced way of thinking.
