Adlerian Therapy Series Worksheet – Acting As If

What is the theory behind this worksheet?

The theory behind this worksheet is Adlerian Theory. Adler believed in the potential of mental fiction and acting them out,  which would eventually spring into what we now know as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

How will this worksheet help?

The counselor can have the client make this task for them to act out what they want to be. Remember, Adler is future-oriented and this task aims to let a client “experience” what he/she wants to be. By acting out, the counselor can process the client after acting out, asking him/her of the difficulties, and hindrances and these will be the focus of the client in terms of improvement towards realizing what he/she acted out.

This approach encourages the client to act out a positive behavior daily. By acting out and feeling the new experience, the client receives responses from other people until he/she eventually actualizes the acted behavior.

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet requires the client to act out a task to develop or improve a behavior. The counselor will assist the client in coming up with a limited task that can be completed.  After the task, the counselor will process the client on his/her experience.
