What is the theory behind this worksheet?

Fortune telling/predicting the future/ arbitrary inference/jumping to conclusions is one type of cognitive distortion where a person is expecting a certain outcome (for example, a situation will turn out badly) without appropriate evidence.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), people have the opportunity to recognize and confront their tendencies to jump to conclusions in thinking. Through this process, they can substitute these thoughts with ones that are more balanced and grounded in evidence. Such practices are effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, boosting self-esteem, and fostering healthier interpersonal connections.
