What is the theory behind this worksheet?

The “mental filter” refers to the tendency to isolate a negative aspect within any circumstance and concentrate solely on it, consequently viewing the entire situation through a negative lens.

Burns (2020) illustrates this concept through the analogy of specialized eyeglasses equipped with lenses that block out anything positive. With this filter in place, positive elements are barred, leading to the inclination to perceive everything in a negative light.

For example, one may fixate on a personal error while disregarding or failing to acknowledge the positives surrounding it.
