What is the theory behind this worksheet?

Overgeneralization is a type of cognitive distortion where a person draws a general conclusion about his ability, performance, or worth based on a single incident. For example, after only one rejection from a job interview, a person thinks he will never find a job in his life or that he is always going to be unsuccessful.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), people have the opportunity to recognize and confront their distorted thinking. Through this process, they can substitute these thoughts with ones that are more balanced and grounded in evidence. Such practices are effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, boosting self-esteem, and fostering healthier interpersonal connections.
