What is the theory behind the worksheet?

The “Take Every Thought Captive” worksheet is based on the principles of cognitive behavioral theory also known as CBT which is the most popular theory of psychology.

According to CBT, human thought, emotion, and action are all related and in the process of changing the thought process, the feelings and behavior are also altered.

This worksheet particularly uses the CBT technique referred to as cognitive restructuring, which involves both identification and analysis of negative or distorted thought patterns that cause negative emotions.

How will the worksheet help?

The purpose of this worksheet is to enable the client to regain control of the thoughts in their head that enrich their mental health. By practicing the exercises provided, users can:

  • Identify as soon as possible if there are any thoughts that are not helpful and are causing distress.
  • Refute these thoughts and incorporate other points of view.
  • Replace any distorted or dysfunctional thoughts with healthier ways of thinking.
  • Help to reduce sensation of anxiety, depression and stress using a different mode of perceiving situations.

How to use the worksheet?

To work on the worksheet, start by defining trigger skills that could lead to unwanted thoughts or feelings.

Memorize those scenarios and write down the negative thought patterns that come to your mind in relation to each life event. Next, evaluate these thoughts by questioning their basis in reality versus assumptions, and consider their realism.

Question these negative thoughts, trying to find other, more constructive ways of looking at them and looking for exceptions.

Then, write down positive, achievable statements that would help eradicate negative thoughts. As you do this, incorporate mindfulness concepts to ensure that you are concentrating completely on the present and also not judging your thoughts.
