What is the theory behind the worksheet?

This worksheet is rooted in the principles of CBT, which is an incredibly popular mental health model that aims to change cognitive and behavioral patterns.

The premise is that through exposure to such negative thoughts and training in more adaptive problem-solving skills, one can manage anxiety and enhance emotional health.

CBT has been widely investigated and documented as a valuable tool in the treatment of anxiety and other related disorders (Hofmann et al., 2012).

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet is useful in managing anxiety and worry since one is expected to write down current worries which gives them a tangible item that one can examine for what is causing anxiety.

Cognitive restructuring refers to evaluating negative thoughts and modifying them to have a lesser impact on anxiety, or if possible placing them in a more constructive and rational perspective.

Also, when anxious, it is helpful to have a list of coping strategies on hand so that steps that can be taken to decrease anxiety can be implemented.

How to use the worksheet?

  1. Identifying Your Worries:
  • In a calm and quiet place, make a list of up to three concerns that you have in the present moment. It is important to be precise and truthful in expressing what is likely to upset you.
  1. Challenging Negative Thoughts:
  • For each of the worries, they should now say what the negative thought related to each of the worries is.
  • Cognitively respond to them by asking yourself whether these thoughts are rational or if there exists proof to the claims. It is also useful to jot down a more constructive or positive perspective to view the situation.
  1. Developing Coping Strategies:
  • Explain some concrete actions that you can take to manage anxiety. These might include; exercises such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or an exercise routine, as well as a conversation with a supportive friend.
