What is the theory behind the worksheet?

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects communication abilities. Some individuals on the spectrum are non-verbal and require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods to assist them in their communication.

These methods should be encouraged and used in place of verbal speech without limiting the individual’s ability to interact with their environment. There are many digital options for AAC, however, the methods can be simple, especially in the beginning.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet offers a basic guide to creating talking cards, a possible AAC method. These cards can be used to encourage communication and develop vocabulary. Both words and images are included on the card to assist the individual in understanding what the card refers to.

How to use the worksheet?

As a parent, work with your child and create these cards. You may wish to print them on colored paper or decorate them in a way that makes them unique to your child. Imagine them as your child’s voice.

Teaching your child to communicate using these cards will help increase their independence and self-esteem. As their vocabulary or needs increase, you can add more talking cards.
