What is the theory behind the worksheet?

The “Window of Tolerance ” worksheet is derived from the theory developed by Dr. Dan Siegel regarding the seed of trauma.

The amplitude of the emotional response defines a region of peak performance in which people can work most efficiently.

Such stressors allow one to control his or her feelings, think calmly and rationally about the various challenges, and respond appropriately.

When we shift from one time frame to another, we may get hyperaroused which is characterized by high stress and anxiety, or hypocharged which causes detachment and sluggishness in responding to challenges.

The worksheet focuses on assisting people in figuring out when they drift out of the window of tolerability and then how to regain this window as well as stay within it.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet assists as it organizes the process of how to evaluate the emotional states present in one’s life. It facilitates:

1. Self-awareness, since it generates awareness of a person’s emotional status or events that may elicit a certain behavior, self-awareness is enhanced.

2. Identification of Triggers, it assists in naming certain eventualities, mental processes, or body experiences that make the person leave their zone of security.

3. Development of Coping Strategies, fosters the use of personal regulation strategies to moderate stress, and emotional pressures as a method of avoiding and managing them.

4. Commitment to Practice, it provides incentives to use these methods in actual situations since participants would want them to improve with time when handling emotions.

How to use the worksheet?

  1. To complete the worksheet, first, identify the recent events or circumstances that made you feel out of your comfort zone and then, describe the emotions experienced.
  1. Describe the events that led to this state, or the thoughts and physical feelings you had as well as any indicators you noted with your bodily responses.
  1. Consider how your feelings influenced your actions and the result.
  1. Select and explain ways of regulating emotions including breathing, awareness meditation, physical activity, or discussing with someone.
  1. Choose what strategies are going to be utilized in the following episodes if you feel beyond your window of tolerance, and come up with how you are going to train yourself to employ them.
