What is the theory behind the worksheet?

The WOOP method was created by following the works of Gabriele Oettingen, a professor of psychology who established the method based on her findings on motivation and goal setting.

The theory is based on the concepts of positive thinking and realistic planning, but in this case, a healthy mix of both is used to attain goals.

While positive thinking itself may cause congestion, a clear plan assists in addressing challenges that may emerge.

How will the worksheet help?

  1. It helps one to direct his or her efforts on what is most desired since a clear vision of what one wants shall drive such efforts.
  2. Visualization involves creating a mental image of the ultimate goal and has been found to motivate learners and give a clear sense of achievement.
  3. By identifying risks that may originate within an organization, an individual is able to develop effective ways of dealing with these risks hence building resilience.
  4. Having a clear plan makes the chances of overcoming that much higher since it’s an expectation rather than uncertainty.

How to use the worksheet?

  1. Wish: Begin by noting down a major desire or objective. This should be something that is important and worthy of effort, and at the same time achievable.
  1. Outcome: Alternatively, try to picture and explain in detail the ideal scenario when this goal is attained. How will you feel? In what way will things be different?
  1. Obstacle: Analyze potential internal barriers that are likely to hinder you from achieving this goal. These could be feelings, behavior, or even ways of thinking.
  1. Plan: Outline how these challenges can be addressed. Use “if-then” statements to create specific action steps. For example, “If I feel unmotivated, then I will call a friend for support
