What is the theory behind the 4th step inventory worksheet?

The 4th Step Inventory is 1 of 12 steps of the AA/NA recovery program. It is a structured tool designed to help one in recovery conduct a thorough introspection. 

It has a catalyst effect on reflection on personal strengths and weaknesses, actions and their consequences, personal ethics, and beliefs. 

It also helps to explore the relationships, including harm caused and resentments held, and emotional experiences; such as fears, and coping mechanisms. Additionally, the worksheet addresses spiritual beliefs and practices, in search of understanding their influence on actions and decisions making

How will the worksheet help?

By working through the 4th step worksheet, an individual can develop a deeper understanding of one’s behavior and motivations. 

It can also help to identify any pattern or behavior that may be contributing to addictive behavior. This process is challenging and uncomfortable. 

But at the same time, it is also an important part of the recovery process. it allows an individual to take responsibility for his/her past actions and take initiative in the process of compensation and modifying behavior

How to use the worksheet?

Each question listed above roughly corresponds to the 4th step of the Al-Anon program. 

To use the 4th-step Al-Anon worksheet effectively. 

First read each question, considering how this relates to your personal experiences and emotions. Next, write your thoughts in the box of “Answer”  for each question. 

Reflect on the resentment related to alcohol in your life, spiritual beliefs, and connection to a higher power, and any character flaws or recurring behaviors that need attention. 

You write what are resentments and fears to make personal inventory effective.

For devising an action plan on personal inventory, consider discussing your thoughts and progress with a therapist, or support group.
