What is the theory behind this CBT Phobias Worksheet?

Phobias are irrational fears of specific objects, situations or activity with varying intensities. This fear is intense enough for the person to go to great lengths to avoid their object of fear. Exposure to related situations causes extreme distress and discomfort. Cognitive Behavioural therapy works to identify the link between unhelpful thoughts, behaviours and emotions and then works on gradual exposure to the feared stimulus till it no longer elicits the same level of fear.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help a client list down the activities that are related to the phobia they are seeking help for in the order of most feared to least feared. They will be required to give each a rating of 1 – 10 based on how much fear the situation elicits. This hierarchy will form the basis of designing and executing exposure therapy.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to first state the phobia they are seeking help for. Then instruct them to write down as many related situations as they can beginning with most feared to least feared ones. They also have to give each a rating of 1- 10 to indicate the level of fear it generates.
