What is the theory behind this CBT Rumination Worksheet?
Rumination is when one persistently recalls their painful past and its associated memories, thoughts and feelings. This leads to unhelpful thoughts that negatively impact one’s emotions and subsequent actions. The act of rumination brings nothing but discomfort and pain and can have both mental and physical repercussions if not controlled in time.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will help clients keep track of their rumination throughout the day. It will help them log the situation, their feelings and their distraction techniques at the time of the rumination. This will help identify triggers and the content of their rumination so they can be properly addressed in therapy sessions.
How to use the worksheet?
Instruct the client to use the log to keep track of what they were ruminating about, the situation at the time, how it made them feel and what they did to distract themselves. Tell them to also write what worked as a distraction technique and what did not.
