What is the theory behind this CBT Worksheet for ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder which is diagnosed in early childhood and can last into adulthood. It is characterised behavioural issues such as inability to sit still and focus on tasks, impulsivity, inability to follow instructions and difficulty interacting with others. CBT can help such individuals identify and modify their unhelpful thinking. Along with negative thinking research has shown individuals with ADHD can even have overly positive thoughts which end up setting them up for failure and further distress.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will help adult clients with ADHD to record their negative automatic thoughts and overly positive thoughts and how they make them feel. This exercise will be a precursor to the introduction of identifying and correcting thinking errors. It will help them determine what situations trigger their negative or overly positive thoughts and how they can begin to challenge them.
How to use the worksheet?
This worksheet must be used in session first to help clients with ADHD practice recording their thoughts as it can be a difficult task for them. Instruct them to first describe the situation, followed by the thoughts going on in their mind at the time and then write how those thoughts make them feel. They should also give an intensity rating to their feelings.
