What is the theory behind this Thinking Errors in Addiction Worksheet?

Thinking errors also called cognitive distortions are exaggerated false thoughts or beliefs about the self, others and the world in general. One’s belief in these thoughts becomes so strong at some point that they see nothing wrong in them when in reality they have no evidence to back them. These thoughts play a particularly crucial role in maintaining compulsive behaviours and hampering their recovery such as alcohol abuse and addiction.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will provide information about the various cognitive distortions that are common in maintaining addictive behaviours as a means of spreading awareness about them. This can help people challenge their thinking instead of automatically perceiving a situation through a distorted thinking viewpoint.

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet can be provided as an information handout to people seeking help for addiction behaviours or for the general public for mental health awareness.  It can be helpful to discuss in individual and group sessions with people struggling with addictions.
