One needs clarity in the usage of the terms mental illness and mental health. Researchers highlighted confusion in understanding the difference between these terms among individuals and explained them as separate yet related concepts.

What Are the Theories Behind This Worksheet?

Ryff and Singer (1998 as cited in Dogra & Leighton, 2009) defined that mental health is not a medical concept like having no problem or absence of mental illness but rather a philosophical aspect defined as a good life – having a purpose, quality relationships, and a sense of mastery as well as self-respect.

It makes the explanation similar to the World Health Organization definition. Still, it was an incomplete stance because human beings do not exist in isolation. They experience a variety of influences, the impact of their surroundings, and social and physical environment.

Further, the interpretation of ‘good life’ can vary from person to person. However, mental illness includes various forms of explanations, from mental disorders to mental health problems based on severe psychiatric conditions to behavioral problems among individuals. However, all such explanations cover the alteration in mood, thinking, and behavior associated with distress and impaired overall functioning with challenges in various domains of life.
