What is the theory behind this Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Worksheet?
Acceptance and Commitment therapy is a type of Cognitive Behavioral therapy that aims to help individuals overcome their sufferings through mindful acceptance of their painful thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It proposes that painful emotions must be faced instead of avoided in order to live a meaningful life.
How will the worksheet help?
The worksheet is based on a stage of ACT called ‘Creative hopelessness’ when the individual is made to realise that whatever current coping strategies they are using to control their pain is not helping. This acceptance will give them a chance to let go of repeating unhelpful strategies and redirect that energy into finding newer and better ways to cope instead.
How to use the worksheet?
Ask your client to write down all the strategies that they have tried to cope with their emotional pain. Instruct them to write down how those strategies have helped them until now. Lastly, tell them to comment on how sure they are that the strategies are effective.
