What is the theory behind the Anxiety Avoidance Worksheet?

The theories behind the worksheet are the following: First is the Expectancy Theory of Avoidance which stresses the important role of threat expectations. Second it the Behavioral Theory, specifically on the concept of Conditioning.

How will this worksheet help?

This worksheet will help the counselee through self-awareness. Furthermore, it gives the counselee the idea of the cost of his avoidance. Lastly, there is a column that asks the counselee how he can lessen the avoidance behavior.

For the counselor, the worksheet provided a good jump-off point for succeeding sessions. This will also serve as an informal assessment tool of the counselee which the counselor can utilize for discussion.

How to use the worksheet?

The worksheet starts by asking what is the counselee anxious about.

It then asks to specify the avoidance behavior followed by when and where the said behavior occurs.

The worksheet also asks the counselee what he thinks are possible reasons why the counselee is anxious.

It then proceeds to ask the counselee about the specific costs of his avoidance. This way, it gives the counselee a point to realize the expense of avoiding.

Lastly, it indirectly asks the counselee to set goals by letting the counselee answer the possible steps to be taken to lessen the avoidance behavior.
