What is the theory behind this Art Therapy Worksheet for Depression?

Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that encourages expression of one’s conscious and subconscious self through the medium of creative expression in the form of art. It allows individuals to express the internal state of their mind in a light-hearted and non-threatening way. It can be particularly helpful for adolescent depression as they are often resistant to traditional patterns of talk therapy. Art therapy can help therapists gain an insight into the adolescent’s mind till they ease into the therapeutic process. 

How will the worksheet help?

The worksheet will help clients express their emotions through the drawing of a facial mask that will show how they actually feel on the inside and what persona they allow others to see. It can give valuable insights about their insecurities and sense of self which can help the therapist get a deeper understanding of their self-worth and self-image. 

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to draw a facial mask. Use the front of the mask to show the side of you that you have portrayed to others or how they view you. Use the inside of the mask to show how you actually feel on the inside that no one knows about you.

Draw a facial mask. On the outside show how you think others view you based on what you allow them to see about you. On the inside show how you actually feel on the inside, the side of you that you keep hidden from the outside world.
