What is the theory behind this CBT Challenging Questions Worksheet?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is found to be the most effective evidence-based technique in psychotherapy. It contains several techniques to improve a person’s thought process. According to its theory peoples thinking patterns are directly linked to their emotions and behavior and maladaptive thinking patterns lead us toward the expression of maladaptive behavior and create distress in our life. By challenging those patterns and beliefs we can help the client improve their behavior.

This worksheet will help to identify the thoughts that lead them to the expression of maladaptive behavior and make them more vulnerable to experiencing negative emotions. Clients can identify to which extent the problem is creating impairment in their life. It will enhance clients’ realistic thinking by removing thinking errors that lead them to the generation of assumptions.   

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet is helpful for a client in order to have more understanding of therapeutic structure. Instruct clients to identify their maladaptive thought and ask them to write associated emotions. These are skills that clients lack and require therapy to deal with distress. Ask them to rate their level of distress to assess their vulnerability and then help them compare thoughts to reality and generate alternative thoughts.
