What is the theory behind this CBT Children’s Emotion Worksheet?

It is important to begin teaching emotion regulation skills to children as young as in their preschool years. Acquiring the ability to observe,  identify and manage emotions can go a long way in helping them control their reactions and learn effective ways of coping. Children can be taught to put their emotion into words by making them think about how the particular emotion made them feel, why it happened and what they did about it.

How will the worksheet help?

The worksheet can help young kids observe and identify their emotions, the causes and their consequences. It will help them learn how to structure their words when they want to communicate how they are feeling and why. It will also help them become more observant of their own emotions and what triggers them.

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet can be used as a teaching resource, an at-home activity or as part of counselling or therapy sessions for young kids to teach them emotion literacy and emotion regulation skills. Instruct them to think of a strong emotion they felt recently, colour the balloon and fill in details about it.
