What is the theory behind the CBT Continuum Worksheet?

Continuum technique is a systematic process used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aimed at helping individuals challenge their unhelpful beliefs and replacing them with modified and rational beliefs. It is a helpful way through which individuals can challenge their irrational beliefs.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will provide a basic CBT continuum template that clients can use to challenge their unhelpful beliefs. It will help them test their irrational beliefs or assumptions in a systematic way so that it is easier to look for alternative helpful beliefs that can replace the old ones.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to first identify the belief that needs to be changed. Explain how the continuum works with one end representing the worst possible criterias for the belief and one end representing the best possible criterias for the same belief. Now instruct them to write those criterias and mark where they currently stand on the continuum. Based on what they come up with, tell them to now think of a revised rational belief to replace the old one.
