What is the theory behind the CBT Emotional Regulation Worksheet?
Emotion regulation is the ability to regulate one’s emotions i.e to be able to acknowledge one’s emotions and act appropriately rather than completely either avoiding them or letting them influence one’s decisions. It can include even basic everyday skills like calming oneself down in a state of anger or anxiety or distracting oneself to deal with overwhelming emotions. It can be explained as the ability to manage emotions in the most effective way.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will help clients evaluate their emotions and how they react to them and manage them over a course of two weeks. This exercise is a precursor to emotion regulation training as it will provide vital information to both the client and therapist about where the client needs help with handling their emotions.
How to use the worksheet?
Instruct the client to use the worksheet to note down any significant negative emotions and how they manage or react to them over a period of two weeks. They can fill the worksheet by the end of the day or soon after any significant negative emotional episode
