What is the theory behind this CBT Mental Health Worksheet?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on helping people identify, challenge and modify their unhelpful thinking patterns and negative core beliefs that ultimately guide all their emotions and behaviour. According to CBT maladaptive behaviour and distressing emotions can be linked with faults in one’s thinking and false beliefs about oneself, others and the world in general . 

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet is based on an important concept taught in CBT that helps people differentiate their thoughts from facts. It is important for one’s mental health to not take their own faulty thinking as an actual fact with real life consequences. This worksheet will help clients identify their negative thoughts and think about what makes it a fact or an opinion. 

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to write down five negative thoughts that they often have about themselves, others or the world in general. Tell them to provide an explanation for why they think this thought is a fact or an opinion.
