What is the theory behind this CBT Motivation Worksheet?
An Advantage/Disadvantage analysis is a tool used in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help clients make well-informed decisions. One way it can also help is to enhance motivation to change a particular unhelpful behaviour. If a client is having trouble finding the motivation to leave an unhelpful habit or change a particular way of thinking, the advantage/disadvantage analysis is the right tool to use.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will provide a basic advantage/disadvantage analysis template that can be used for clients having issues with staying motivated towards a particular goal. This worksheet will help them think about the advantages and disadvantages of both achieving their goals and not achieving their goals.
How to use the worksheet?
Instruct the client to think about the goal that they want to achieve. Instruct them to think about and write down the advantages and disadvantages each of achieving the goal and not achieving the goal. Tell them to refer to the worksheet whenever they feel they are running low on motivation.
