What is the theory behind this CBT Shame Worksheet?

Shame is a strong negative emotion that arises from self-critical thoughts making one believe there is something inherently wrong with who they are as a person. Shame tells us we have done something against our values or against societal norms. Where it may help keep our behaviour in check, shame-proneness has been linked with depression and anxiety disorders. 

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help clients keep track of what triggers their shame, how it makes them feel and what they do to cope with or reduce the unpleasant feelings that follow. This information will help therapists understand the underlying reasons behind their client’s shame and their helpful or unhelpful coping mechanisms. 

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to use the worksheet at the end of the day to note down the circumstances surrounding their feelings of shame,its intensity, how it made them feel and what they did to reduce the resulting discomfort or pain.
