What is the theory behind this CBT Trichotillomania Worksheet?

Trichotillomania is a type of impulse control disorder that is characterised by constant urges to pull one’s hair from the scalp, lashes, eyebrows or other parts of the body. The condition causes significant hair loss and severely affects everyday functioning.  It could be a response to boredom, stress or inability to cope with uncomfortable emotions. Interventions based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy have shown their effectiveness in helping such individuals manage their symptoms.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet can help individuals struggling with trichotillomania to track their daily progress and keep a record of the coping strategies they have used.  This worksheet can help in the later stages of therapy where the individual is in the implementation phase and testing out which coping strategies are helpful or not. Keeping track in this way can bring to light certain patterns that can influence further treatment plans.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to use the worksheet to keep track of what triggered their hair-pulling behaviour and the coping strategies they used to overcome it. They have to fill out the worksheet daily till they report for the next session. Responses can then be probed further where needed.
