What is the theory behind this CBT Worksheet for Delusional Disorder?

Delusional disorder is a serious psychotic disorder where an individual suffers from one or more delusions. A delusion is a false belief that is strongly believed in despite evidence to the contrary. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp) was introduced by Aaron Beck to help individuals manage their daily functioning despite their psychotic symptoms. It has since been proven effective in reducing psychotic symptoms when paired with medication.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet can help individuals undergoing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis gather evidence for and against their delusional thoughts to be challenged and replaced with alternative thoughts. This worksheet will help encourage the individual to seek out evidence which can make it easier for the therapist to gently work on challenging their beliefs in therapy.

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet is to be used in CBTp after a formulation has been made and the individual understands what maintains their delusions. Instruct them to track their distressing thoughts and gather evidence for and against it for at least a week. The responses can be then further probed and used to help the individual think of alternative explanations other than their delusion.
