What is the theory behind this Compulsive Shopping Worksheet?

Compulsive shopping or compulsive spending is a type of addiction where an individual feels compelled to keep spending their money to buy things they may or may not even need. They indulge in such behavior to avoid confronting underlying painful emotions, just like any other addiction. But the temporary high is soon replaced with regret, stress, and other negative emotions when the reality of the financial loss dawns on them.

How will the worksheet help?

The worksheet can help individuals recovering from their shopping addiction in identifying what triggers their compulsion. It will help them become more aware of the situations that precede their compulsive urge to shop which can highlight certain patterns that could indicate their triggers.

How to use the worksheet?

Individuals can use this worksheet to keep track of their compulsive shopping habits. They have to write down the situation that preceded their urge to shop along with their thoughts and emotions before and after. Based on this information the therapist can work with the individual to determine what could have possibly triggered that particular episode.
