Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a type of talking therapy treatment specifically adapted to treat individuals who suffer from extremely intense emotions.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that severely affects a person’s ability to regulate emotions.

The most effective form of therapy for BPD is DBT. 

DBT has improved symptoms of BPD by teaching skills that include mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

In DBT “dialectical” refers to the idea of needing both acceptance and change to help improve symptoms of BPD.
