What is the theory behind this DBT Worksheet for BPD?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and was designed specifically for Borderline Personality Disorder by Marsha Linehan. Like CBT, it focuses on an individual’s thought processes and how they affect their emotions, behaviour and relationships. . It has four components: Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. 

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet is a part of the Emotion Regulation component of DBT where individuals are taught to manage negative emotions and foster positive emotions. This worksheet will provide a useful easy to remember acronym that individuals can use to remind themselves of the emotion regulation skills they will have learned in DBT. 

How to use this worksheet?

Instruct the client to read and understand the various components of the  ‘ABC – PLEASE’ acronym that is a summary of what they would have learned in DBT. Tell them to write down how they have begun to apply each in their life or how they plan on incorporating those skills in the future.
