What is the theory behind the worksheet?

Self-harm is a complicated set of behaviors and one will need to understand the reasoning behind it to fully support the management of it.

This worksheet looks at 5 different reasons one might self-harm and ways to manage and redirect the self-harm. Many of these methods will be enhanced when working with a mental health professional and a Safety Plan.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet offers a variety of actions that can be tried when managing self-harm behaviors. These actions are split up according to the reason the person is self-harming. However, if you find an action in the list that you think can help you, then try it out. Remember, if one action doesn’t work for you, then try a different one.

How to use the worksheet?

Explore the different actions to manage your self-harm. It is best done with some form of support, whether it is a loved one or a mental health practitioner. There is a ‘Reflection Statement’ in the worksheet that you can record which actions you wish to take. Keep this statement in easy reach, when you feel like self-harming you can get the statement and look for an action instead of having to remember which actions you wrote down.
