DEAR MAN is a skill intended to help individuals develop effective interpersonal communication that will help get their needs met. DEAR MAN is an acronym that stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear, and Negotiate.

The GIVE skill is intended to help individuals maintain a relationship.  GIVE is an acronym that stands for Gentle, Interested, Validate, and East manner.

The FAST skill is an important component of communication as it requires individuals to be truthful about their problems and not sacrifice their integrity. FAST is an acronym that stands for Fair, Apologies, Sticking to Your Values, and Truthful.

What Are The Theories Behind This Worksheet?

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a type of talking therapy specifically adapted to treat individuals who suffer from extremely intense emotions.

DBT treatment is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and is used to help struggling individuals identify and positively change negative thinking patterns.

DBT focuses on providing therapeutic skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and The Middle Path.

DEAR MAN GIVE FAST is a sub-skill of interpersonal effectiveness that is used to communicate facts about a situation with no judgment, respect the other person’s thoughts/ feelings, and learn to communicate with respect for yourself.
