What is the theory behind the How to Talk About Your Feelings For Kids Worksheet?

Teaching young kids to be able to identify,  name and properly express what they are feeling is crucial for their emotion regulation skills. It can save a lot of frustration for both the kids and the parents when kids are able to properly express what they are feeling, why they are feeling that way and what they can do about it instead of simply reacting to or throwing pointless tantrums.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help younger clients put their feelings into words. Once they have learned to identify and name their emotions they can move on to writing about when they feel a certain emotion. This exercise will help them practise how they can talk about their feelings with adults or friends instead of bottling them up inside.

How to use the worksheet?

Use this worksheet after a thorough discussion on the importance of identifying and expressing one’s feelings. Instruct young clients to think back to a time when they felt any of the given emotions then write down what made them feel that way. Explain how they can talk about what they are feeling in a similar way.
