This worksheet introduces you to Transactional Analysis (TA), a psychological theory exploring the interactions between individuals, or ‘transactions’. TA helps us understand our behavior patterns and how they affect our relationships.

What Are The Theories Behind This Worksheet?

Transactional Analysis was developed by Dr. Eric Berne in the 1950s. It is based on three primary concepts:

  1. Ego States: These are consistent patterns of feeling and experience directly related to a corresponding consistent pattern of behavior. The three ego states are Parent, Adult, and Child.
  2. Transactions: These are the exchanges of communication between individuals, and they can be complementary (when the sender and receiver are in expected ego states) or crossed (which can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts).
  3. Life Scripts: These are unconscious life plans based on childhood experiences, often carried into adulthood.

How Will This Worksheet Help You?

By using this worksheet, you will be able to:

  • Identify which ego states you operate from in various interactions.
  • Understand how your transactions affect your communications and relationships.
  • Reflect on your life script and consider changes for healthier outcomes.

How Should You Use This Worksheet?

Engage with each prompt thoughtfully and honestly. There’s no right or wrong answer here—this worksheet is a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. It is most effective when you take your time to think through your responses and revisit them periodically.
