Ego State Therapy Worksheet

What is the theory behind this Ego State Therapy Worksheet?

Ego state therapy, also referred to as ‘parts therapy’, which believes at any point there are three states of being operating within the human psyche: one based on what we learned from our parents, one based on our childhood experiences and one based on our current adult self which adapts to the reality around it. These three ego states strongly influence the way we think, act and feel.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help clients understand the concept of the three ego states and how they exist and influence their thoughts, feelings and actions. By prompting them to recall experiences that indicate parent, child and adult ego state they will be able to relate to the concept much better before moving on with further sessions. This is the first step before they begin exploring which parts are playing a prominent role in the current issues.

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet can be used in the initial stages of therapy where the client is still grasping the concept of the three ego states and what it means for them to exist within them at the same time. Instruct them to read the brief descriptions of each and answer the self-reflection questions that follow.
