What is the theory behind this CBT Uncertainty Worksheet?

Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) refers to one’s fear or worry with respect to the unpredictable quality of the  future. This fear can eventually lead to the development of Generalised anxiety disorder and contribute in maintaining the vicious cycle of worry and anxiety. The most effective way to address IU in therapy is to use behavioural experiments to help clients test their beliefs about uncertainty.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help clients design and test their beliefs about uncertainty using behavioural experiments. This will help them test and observe the outcomes of their predicted beliefs about uncertainty. Once they realise their predictions do not always come true it will gradually weaken their unhelpful beliefs.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to write down any of their beliefs regarding uncertainty and also how strongly they believe in it. Then tell them to design an experiment to test their beliefs or prediction regarding uncertainty. Then tell them to write down the actual outcome and compare it with their predictions. They have to end the experiment by writing down what they learned from it regarding the trueness of their beliefs.
