Expectation Setting Template

Video & audio overview of the template

What is the theory behind the template?

Having a client set out and communicate their expectations of the therapy process, the therapist, and themselves at the onset of the therapeutic process is helpful because it provides clarity for therapist and client on the aims and direction of the intervention.

These expectations can help you with the conceptualization of your client. They can also inform your reflections on your client’s progress as you can return to these expectations to review them. This can be done with the client or in your notes.

How will the template help?

This template provides a clear structure for a client to voice their expectations at the start of the process. It also allows for the expectations to be reviewed in the future. As the initial expectations have been documented and stored in the client’s file they will not be forgotten or dismissed.

How to use the template?

Introducing the idea of expectations to your client in the initial session can be a helpful method of using this template. You may wish to ask them to think about their expectations and complete the template for homework.

This offers them the opportunity to provide thought-out expectations that you can discuss together in the next session.
