Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) designed to treat individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
The exposure component of ERP refers to confronting the thoughts, images, or situations that make you anxious or provoke your obsessions. The response prevention part of ERP refers to choosing not to act on a compulsive behavior once the anxiety or obsession has been triggered.
ERP is designed to reduce the anxiety that feeds obsessions and compulsions gradually.
