Assertive communication is the ability to express opinions, ideas, and emotions respectfully without harming the feelings of others.

Assertiveness can be understood as a relational style between being passive and being aggressive. It includes both verbal and non-verbal behaviors.

  1. Behavioral Theories

This theory proposes that unassertive responses are learned during the development stages and carried into adulthood. Behavioral approaches can be addressed with specific behavioral training including eye contact, posture, tone of voice, or specific verbal responses.

  1. Cognitive Theories

This theory suggests that unassertive behavior arises from unhelpful beliefs that prevent an individual from being assertive during specific situations.
