What is the theory behind this Naikan Reflection Worksheet?
Naikan Therapy was originated by a Japanese Buddhist by the name Ishin Yoshimoto in the 1940’s.It emphasizes heavily on self reflection as a means to understand the self, the world and the purpose of one’s existence. It promotes viewing one’s self in relation to everything and everyone else around them as a way towards achieving self-freedom and peace of mind.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet is based on the three main questions that are at the core of all daily and weekly Naikan reflection exercises. These questions help individuals reflect on their own behaviour with respect to others around them by prompting them to think about what they have given to others, what they have received from others and how one could have been a cause of difficulty for others.
How to use this worksheet?
Instruct the client to use the worksheet on a daily basis to reflect on the three questions. The responses have to be specific sentences that reflect an action that was taken as opposed to being ambiguous. They must write about what they gave, what they have received and what difficulties they may have caused.
