What is the theory behind this Schema Bias Worksheet?
Schemas are the glasses through which we view the world. These are patterns of beliefs that are embedded in our minds based on prior experiences that influence the way we perceive and understand the events around and within us. A schema bias refers to the rigidity of these core beliefs and how they have the power to distort our reality. Ultimately these biases lead to negative thoughts and thinking errors that affect one’s emotions and behaviours.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will help CBT therapists to help their clients understand the concept of schema bias using a graphical representation. They can use the worksheet when educating them about core beliefs and how they tend to influence our perceptions of reality by ignoring all evidence to the contrary. It can be referred back to whenever needed in further sessions especially when new examples come to light.
How to use the worksheet?
This worksheet can be used by CBT therapists at any point in therapy to help clients understand how their schemas influence the way they view the world around them. It can be part of the psychoeducation process and clients can even use it to write down their questions and concerns regarding the concept.
