What is the theory behind this Three States of Mind DBT Worksheet?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy believes there to be three states of mind that a person is strongly influenced by throughout their lives. The Emotional Mind influences individuals to make decisions based purely on emotional reasons without giving thought to long term consequences. The Rational Mind dismisses the emotional aspect completely influencing an individual to lead a robotic life based purely on reason and logic. DBT teaches individuals to reach a balanced state of mind called the Wise Mind, where they believe a balanced and happy life awaits. 

How will the worksheet help? 

This worksheet will provide information about the three states of mind that can be useful for the client as a reminder of working towards achieving a balanced wise mind instead of getting influenced by the other extreme states of mind. It will help them analyse and modify their decisions accordingly.  

How to use the worksheet?

This worksheet can be used in the psychoeducation stage of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. The infosheet can be used to explain the concept of the three states of mind and work as a reminder for them to be mindful of both the rational and emotional aspects of a situation to reach a balanced decision.
