What is the theory behind this CBT Worksheet for Hoarding Disorder?
Hoarding disorder is a recent addition to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (V) and is characterised by an unnecessary emotional attachment to materialistic possessions with an inability to let go of them. Whether the item is valuable or not holds no meaning. With time, an individual with hoarding disorder will find their living space cluttered with seemingly useless things to the point that it gets difficult for them to function normally in their own house leading to significant impairment and distress. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Hoarding Disorder has proven to be effective in reducing symptoms over time.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet can help individuals struggling with a hoarding disorder to come up with a gradual exposure plan. They can use it to set small achievable goals for themselves that can help them gradually declutter the items around them while also keeping track of how they affect their emotions. This worksheet will also help them plan rewards for reaching those steps as a way to keep up their motivation.
How to use the worksheet?
Instruct the client to use the worksheet to plan small goals that they can work towards achieving daily. Instruct them to write down a goal for each day of the week along with how they felt afterward, what coping strategies they used to deal with their emotions and how they plan on rewarding themselves for it.
