Character Motivation Worksheet

What is the theory behind this Character Motivation Worksheet?

Cinema therapy is a form of expressive therapy that relies on an individual’s emotional connection with the characters and storyline of a movie that addresses issues they are struggling with such as addiction, anger management, depression, etc.  It hopes to influence an individual’s psyche and help them introspect solutions by relating with the behaviours and personality of the characters in a movie. One aspect of this is considering what they believe to be a character’s motivation behind relatable actions.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help a therapist practicing cinema therapy to help gather their client’s insight into a character’s behaviour throughout a movie. The movie selection will depend on the therapeutic goals specified for the client. Responses can then be used to further rebuild up a healthy discussion on relevant insights from the movie.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to fill out the worksheets comfortably whenever they are done watching the assigned movie. Tell them there are no right or wrong responses and they should not feel pressured to respond in a certain way. After completing this worksheet, discuss the answers and encourage the client to practice the key takeaways from the movie in the upcoming weeks.
