What is the theory behind this Four Steps to Forgiveness Worksheet?

This worksheet is based on the ‘Four Steps to Forgiveness as proposed by William Fergus Martin in his book Forgiveness is Power. He believes forgiveness can bring immense physical, spiritual, and emotional benefits. It applies to both forgiving oneself and others. Either way, when one forgives they are able to break free from a painful past that is limiting their potential to achieve what they want in the present.

How will the worksheet help?

The worksheet will help clients who are in the process of forgiving themselves or others in order to move on to better mental and physical well-being. It will guide them through the four steps that will help them evaluate their feelings and the benefits associated with the act of forgiveness with the aim of motivating them to move in the right direction.

How to use the worksheet?

Instruct the client to first write down who they want to forgive and why. Then they have to list down all the unpleasant feelings that they have been experiencing currently associated with this situation. Then they have to reflect on the many benefits that they can receive as a result of choosing to forgive. In the end, they have to write two powerful affirmations that they can use to motivate themselves to choose forgiveness.
