What is the theory behind this Self-compassion Worksheet?
Self-compassion, as the name suggests, is the act of showing yourself compassion. It includes being kind and gentle with yourself when you make mistakes or face failure. It requires one to be supportive towards one’s own self instead of choosing to be judgemental, harsh or critical. It is far easier to show compassion to a loved one in difficult times and equally hard to do the same for the self.
How will the worksheet help?
This worksheet will prompt the client to address an imaginary compassionate letter to a loved one who has been going through a difficult time. The best way to learn self-compassion is to imagine what one would say or do with a loved one who has been going through a similar difficult situation.
How to use the worksheet?
Instruct the client to think of a recent event that made them feel inadequate and resulted in self-criticism and harsh, judgemental thoughts. Now tell them to imagine a loved one who has been going through the same. They have to write a letter addressed to that person based on what they would say to them in this difficult time.
