What is the theory behind this Mental Health Boundaries Worksheet?

Unhealthy boundaries in relationships occur when either partner does not respect the other’s values, needs and opinions and continues to disregard them. This leads to a possibly toxic or abusive relationship putting the mental health of the abused partner at risk. It is very important in a relationship for partners to define and respect each other’s needs for personal boundaries if they wish to have a long lasting and quality relationship.

How will the worksheet help?

This worksheet will help clients seeking couples or marriage therapy to fix their relationship issues to identify what type of boundaries exist between the two. The signs provided in the worksheet can help them perform a self-analysis to determine whether their behaviour indicates unhealthy or healthy boundaries.

How to use the worksheet?

Provide a copy of the worksheet to each partner and have them analyse their own behaviour according to the given signs in the worksheet. Instruct them to use the checklist to determine which behaviours apply to them. Then explain their choice in the last column of the table.
